A Refreshing Tale of a Delectable Drink

The Salty Dog is a classic cocktail that artfully combines the tartness of grapefruit juice with the crispness of gin, all enhanced by a salted rim. This simple yet sophisticated drink has a rich history and remains a favorite among cocktail enthusiasts.

The key difference between a Salty Dog and a Greyhound is the salted rim; the Greyhound is served in a regular glass without salt. The Salty Dog is a delightful variation of the Greyhound, offering a savory twist that enhances the cocktail's flavors.

The origins of the Salty Dog are somewhat debated. Some sources suggest that it was created in the 1950s by George Jessel, a notable figure in the cocktail world during that era. Jessel is credited with adding a salted rim to the existing Greyhound cocktail—a mix of gin and grapefruit juice—to balance the bitterness of the grapefruit, thereby making the drink more palatable.

The defining feature of the Salty Dog is the salted rim, which enhances the flavors and adds a savory touch. It's a refreshing cocktail that combines the tartness of grapefruit juice with the crispness of gin, served in a glass with a salted rim. Here's our take on it:

Ingredients:

60 ml Prototype Gin

120 ml fresh grapefruit juice (we love Just Pikt)

Ice cubes

Salt for rimming the glass

Lime wedge for garnish

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Glass: Run a lemon or lime wedge around the rim of a highball or rocks glass.

  2. Salt the Rim: Dip the rim into a plate of salt, ensuring it's evenly coated.

  3. Mix the Cocktail: Fill a cocktail shaker with ice, add the Prototype gin and grapefruit juice. Shake well until chilled.

  4. Serve: Fill the prepared glass with ice and strain the mixture into the glass.

  5. Garnish: Add a lime wedge for garnish.
